Al and Jane Nahmad Women's Cancer Center: What Referring Physicians Should Know Before 2027 Opening

Al and Jane Nahmad Women’s Cancer Center

Baptist Health Cancer Care will open the Al and Jane Nahmad Women’s Cancer Center in 2027, consolidating breast, gynecologic and skin oncology, reconstructive surgery and supportive services in one building on the Baptist Hospital campus in Miami.

The center is designed as a first-of-its-kind destination in the Southeastern U.S. and is part of Baptist Health Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute, the flagship of Baptist Health Cancer Care.

The medical director is Anastasia Tousimis, M.D., MBA, a nationally recognized breast surgical oncologist with more than 20 years of experience. She is chief of breast surgery at Baptist Health Cancer Care, deputy director of Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute and Baptist Health Cancer Care, and chief medical liaison for the Memorial Sloan Kettering Partnership. She has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and remains active in clinical research.

“This center is about giving women the care they deserve—comprehensive, compassionate and designed just for them,” Dr. Tousimis says.

Why a Dedicated Center

Women make up about 65 percent of patients at Wertheim Cancer Institute, and Baptist Health expects demand to grow with the region’s population. The center was planned as a response to that volume. It reflects the vision of the late Michael Zinner, M.D., the institute’s founding CEO and executive medical director, who championed a comprehensive, patient-centered approach to women’s cancer care.

Leonard Kalman, M.D., described the October 2025 topping-out as tangible progress toward a future where women with cancer can receive “compassionate and cutting-edge care, all under one roof.” The building’s exterior structure was completed one year after the September 2024 groundbreaking.

The Facility

Nahmad Women’s Cancer Center occupies a 155,000-square-foot, four-story building in the Keeley Pavilion. Planned spaces include on-site infusion therapy suites, private treatment areas, sunlit waiting areas and restorative healing gardens.

Centralized, multidisciplinary clinics bring breast, gynecologic and reconstruction cancer specialists into one practice environment, and skin cancer care is part of the center’s scope. Plans also include diagnostic services and mammography, genetics and dermatology.

An Integrated Clinical Model

The clinic structure is designed to shorten the path from referral to a coordinated treatment plan. In breast oncology, plans account for cancer type and stage, age and overall health. Gynecologic oncology includes nine distinct cancer types, each with its own treatment options, and subspecialists review plans that reflect specific tumor type and patient need.

For skin cancer, a multidisciplinary team spans medical disciplines for screening, diagnosis and treatment. Reconstructive surgeons work alongside oncology teams so that reconstruction planning is part of treatment planning from the start.

“When a woman is referred to us, breast, gynecologic and reconstruction specialists will be in the same building and planning her care together,” Dr. Tousimis says. “That means fewer handoffs and faster answers for her and for the physician who sent her.”

Research and Precision Medicine

Clinical trial programs and precision medicine tailored to women’s cancers are part of the center’s model, as is expanded research capacity. Patients referred here will have access to studies at the point of care. The Memorial Sloan Kettering Partnership adds a further link to academic oncology expertise.

“Clinical trials and precision medicine will be part of everyday care here, so eligible patients have access to emerging options as well as established ones,” Dr. Tousimis says.

Screening, Risk Assessment and Prevention

Many referring physicians are already managing the decisions that come before a cancer diagnosis. Baptist Health’s current guidance for most average-risk women is annual screening beginning at age 40, with 3D mammography read by board-certified breast imaging experts and same-day results at many locations.

Lauren Carcas, M.D., a medical oncologist at Wertheim Cancer Institute, recommends formal breast cancer risk assessment by age 25 and individualized screening decisions through shared decision-making, as outlined in a recent Physician Resources article on mammography guidance.

The center’s prevention and survivorship programs are designed to extend that approach.

“Referring physicians are often the first to see a change in risk,” Dr. Tousimis says. “We want Nahmad Women’s Cancer Center to be a place where that risk is taken seriously, followed carefully and acted on early.”

Supportive Care, Navigation and Survivorship

At the new center, patient navigation, wellness and supportive care services operate under the same roof as treatment. Care coordination is built to reduce delays and give patients quick access to additional teams and services.

Survivorship programs round out the model, which matters for physicians who continue to follow patients through long-term surveillance.

Referral Pathways

Nahmad Women’s Cancer Center is expected to welcome patients in 2027 and will serve patients from South Florida and beyond, including Latin America and the Caribbean. In the meantime, physicians can refer patients to Wertheim Cancer Institute's breast, gynecologic and skin oncology teams through the Refer a Patient page or by calling 1-786-596-2000.

Clinical takeaway: The Al and Jane Nahmad Women’s Cancer Center gives referring physicians a single destination for breast, gynecologic and skin cancers, with reconstruction, infusion, genetics, trials, supportive care and survivorship planning in one building. For patients, that means a coordinated team from the first visit forward. For the referring physician, it means a clear point of contact as the center prepares to open.
