Baptist Health Announces Warren R. Selman, M.D., as Chief Medical Executive for Marcus Neuroscience Institute

Baptist Health South Florida announces the appointment of Warren R. Selman, M.D., as its new chief medical executive for Marcus Neuroscience Institute, a part of Baptist Health, at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. In his new role effective this November, Dr. Selman will oversee the medical operations, provide strategic guidance, and drive the development of cutting-edge treatments at the institute.  

Dr. Selman comes to Baptist Health from University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center where he serves as Emeritus Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery and professor of neurosurgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

“With nearly 40 years of experience, Dr. Selman is a pioneer in the field of neurosurgery, and we are proud to welcome him to Baptist Health,” said Glenn Waters, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Baptist Health. “Dr. Selman will continue to build upon the strong foundation already in place at Marcus Neuroscience Institute to provide excellent care for our patients and further our initiatives in research and teaching.”  

Previously, Dr. Selman served as the Chair of Neurosurgery at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and as the Harvey Huntington Brown, Jr., Professor of Neurosurgery at Case Western University School of Medicine. Dr. Selman also established the Neurological Institute at University Hospitals and served as the inaugural director of the institute.

Having him lead our efforts at Marcus Neuroscience Institute is a tremendous benefit to our patients in Palm Beach County,” said Lincoln Mendez, chief executive officer of Boca Raton Regional Hospital and North Region Executive for Baptist Health. “Dr. Selman brings valuable experience and perspective to our Institute.” 

Dr. Selman’s clinical specialties include the surgical management of cerebrovascular and pituitary disorders, and traumatic brain injury, and his research interests focus on those disorders as well. He is also actively involved in the development and application of virtual and augmented reality in preparation and navigation for neurosurgical procedures and for resident and medical student education and patient education engagement.

Dr. Selman has been active in organized neurosurgery, holding several leadership and editorial positions. Recently he served as President of the Society of Neurological Surgeons, the oldest professional society of neurosurgery throughout the world.  He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and served on the Board of Directors of the AANS, the Chair of the AANS Publications Committee, and was a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Neurosurgery. He is a member and served as the Vice President of the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons. He is a member and served as Vice President of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS). He is a member of the AANS/CNS Section on Cerebrovascular Surgery and served as Chairman of the Section. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and served as Chairman of the Board.

Prior to his entry into medicine, Dr. Selman attended the University of Toledo where he graduated summa cum laude.  He then attended and graduated from Case Western University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. After his surgical internship, he conducted two years of research on focal cerebral ischemia at University Hospitals in Cleveland. Dr. Selman completed his neurosurgical residency training at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and University Hospitals Cleveland. During his residency, he received specialty training in transsphenoidal surgery at the Mayo Clinic.
