Baptist Health Oncologist Rohan Garje Recognized for National Leadership in Cancer Treatment Guidelines
Clinical trials continue to inform how physicians treat advanced prostate cancer. The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) develops guidelines to help oncologists evaluate new evidence and apply it to clinical practice. Rohan Garje, M.D., chief of genitourinary medical oncology at Baptist Health Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute, has played a leading role in this work through his involvement in ASCO's clinical guideline development.
In July 2026, Dr. Garje received the designation of Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (FASCO), recognizing his sustained volunteer service to the organization. His contributions include leading national prostate cancer guideline development and helping ASCO maintain its recommendations as new research becomes available.
Leading National Prostate Cancer Treatment Guidelines
Since 2022, Dr. Garje has chaired ASCO's metastatic prostate cancer guideline development group. Under his leadership, the organization issued major updates to its treatment recommendations in 2022 and 2025, addressing the management of patients with advanced prostate cancer.
The 2025 update, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology with Dr. Garje as lead author, focuses on systemic therapy for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). This advanced form of prostate cancer continues to progress despite treatment to suppress testosterone. The guidelines provide physicians with recommendations based on the available clinical evidence to help inform treatment decisions.
Dr. Garje also coauthored a 2026 article in JCO Oncology Practice discussing the updated recommendations and their implications for clinical practice. The publication offers additional clinical insights into the guidance for physicians treating patients with advanced prostate cancer.
Keeping Treatment Guidelines Current
ASCO has transitioned its metastatic prostate cancer guidance to a living guideline model, allowing recommendations to be revised as new research findings become available. Under this approach, experts regularly review emerging evidence and determine when changes to existing recommendations are warranted.
Dr. Garje has contributed to these efforts through his work with ASCO's Evidence-Based Medicine Committee and Guideline Advisory Group. As a guideline co-chair, he has advised the groups on processes for keeping recommendations current and clinically relevant. He has also provided updates to ASCO leadership, including its Board, on guideline development activities.
Contributions Beyond Prostate Cancer
Dr. Garje's involvement in ASCO guideline development also includes recommendations concerning mismatch repair and microsatellite instability testing. He contributed to ASCO's 2023 endorsement of the College of American Pathologists guideline on these biomarkers, which can help identify patients who are candidates for immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy.
His work with ASCO's Evidence-Based Medicine Committee has included reviewing guidelines concerning metastatic melanoma and metastatic head and neck cancer. He has also provided input on recommendations for somatic genomic testing in patients with advanced cancer.
Since June 2023, Dr. Garje has served on ASCO's Genitourinary Cancer Guideline Advisory Group. In this role, he helps identify gaps in existing clinical guidance and prioritize areas where additional recommendations are needed.
Supporting the Next Generation of Oncologists
Dr. Garje's service to ASCO extends to its initiatives for oncology trainees and physicians early in their careers. From June 2021 through June 2023, he served on the organization's Trainee & Early Career Advisory Group, contributing to discussions about professional development and mentorship.
His involvement included providing input on programs intended to expand leadership opportunities for early-career oncologists and encourage their participation in ASCO. This advisory work formed another part of his volunteer service to the organization.
Recognition for Service to the Oncology Community
The FASCO designation recognizes ASCO members who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to the organization through volunteer service. Members qualify by earning at least 100 points for contributions to ASCO and its philanthropic affiliate, Conquer Cancer, the ASCO Foundation.
Dr. Garje is expected to receive formal recognition at ASCO's 2027 Annual Meeting. The designation acknowledges his ongoing contributions to the organization's work, particularly his leadership in developing clinical guidance for oncologists treating advanced prostate cancer.
