Interventional Radiologists Conduct Clinical Research Trials
Baptist Heart & Vascular Care is participating in research trials to find treatments for limb ischemia resulting from peripheral arterial disease.
Baptist Health Heart & Vascular Care interventional radiologists have been actively involved in research to test new techniques and technology to treat limb ischemia resulting from peripheral arterial disease.
Often this ischemia, or blockage of arteries in the lower extremities, can lead to the need for limb amputation.

Alex Powell, M.D., is the principal investigator for the Stride II trial, assessing the use of a computer-assisted vacuum device to remove blood clots and restore blood flow to the legs. Baptist Health Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute is the lead enroller of patients in the trial, which follows the Stride I trial, which was a landmark trial in treatment of patients with acute limb ischemia and for which the Institute was one of the top enrollers of patients.
Brian Schiro, M.D., is the site principal investigator for the national EVERO™ trial, a randomized trial to study a new technology to enhance the durability of femoropopliteal angioplasty in patients with severe claudication, or rest pain.
The team is also involved in the Elite BTK trial, which uses bioresorbable scaffolds to enhance blood flow in patients with below-the-knee critical limb-threatening ischemia, and has recently completed studies addressing the management of pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis.

Over the past few months, Constantino Peña, M.D., has presented on critical limb-threatening ischemia at the Amputation Prevention Meeting (AMP), discussed the role of IVC filters at the Venous Lymphatic Summit and shared insights on iliac artery embolization techniques at the Global Embolization Symposium (GEST).
Additionally, the interventional radiologists are collaborating with vascular and cardiothoracic surgeons to incorporate new complex thoracic and abdominal aortic techniques. The Aortic Center team members, including Dr. Schiro, Dr. Powell and vascular surgeon Anand Tarpara, M.D., performed the first thoracoabdominal branched endoprosthesis in South Florida, implanting a device to treat a complex perivisceral aortic aneurysm.
