Chapters Transcript Video Meet the Chief: Music, Sports and Yoga Keep Surgeon Horacio Asbun, M.D., Focused I am Horacio Asn. I'm professor in chief of Hepatosis. I was born in La Paz Bolivia and I wanted to be a surgeon. I'm part of several um surgical societies. SAGES is uh one of the most important surgical societies in the United States and in the world. And then it is humbling to know that they look at me as someone that can help move surgery at the world level, your pancreas goes across your abdomen. I deal with a lot of patients that have a pancreas or liver cancer. And there are a tremendous number of success stories and those success stories have a lot to do with the attitude of the patient. Many times when I'm dealing with a problem, I remember my patients, the ones that are facing their mortality. Then many times you put things in perspective and you realize I need to learn from them. Dominic my son wanted to be a physician since he was um very small. He came and joined us just like when he was a little kid and we were playing Nintendo. At the beginning, I used to beat him until he learned more and then I couldn't catch up with him and I'm sure this is what's gonna happen with surgery for now. We're ok. But I'm sure I won't be able to catch up with him in the future. Derek is my youngest son. I was there, uh, when he won the Collegial Championship of rugby, then I just couldn't control myself and I had to jump into the field. My two wonderful son, they are life's gifts. They couldn't be life's gifts if they wouldn't have had a wonderful mother. I'm extremely grateful that I met her and I've been very fortunate. My favorite exercise is snow skiing and I also do yoga in regular basis that, um helps me to be better prepared again physically for my lung surgeries. I do have an interest in music. I feel music if you let it is there with you on the fun times, on the sad times on the tough times just realize that our time here is very limited. I feel that life is to be enjoyed as much as possible. Just try to be a positive influence and that's what it's all about making a difference for the better. Created by
